The following simple procedures will help you get better service from your dishwasher and may prevent a large repair bills

Clean the inside of the door and the outside of the dishwasher occasionally with a damp cloth and mild detergent. The interior and the tub are essentially self-cleaning.
2. Check the bottom of the tub and the filter now and then to remove any insoluble food particles that may have accumulated. Be careful not to burn yourself on the heating rod or coil if the dishwasher has just stopped.
3. If you live in a hard-water area, lime deposits may form on the bottom of the tub and on the door. To remove them, start the dishwasher on the rinse action. While water is entering, open the door and add 1/12 cup of white vinegar. Do not use detergent. Then let the dishwasher finish its cycle.

You want to be sure the dishwasher you buy will not give you an electric shock or cause a fire and that it will be safe for children to be around. You also want a dishwasher that is convenient to load and unload, easy to keep clean, and built so that it will not spill water on your floor.

Insist on a dishwasher with the mark of an independent testing laboratory, such as the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. The mark indicates that the machine has been manufactured to conform to established electrical fire and mechanical safety standards.
Such a dishwasher will also have a door seal switch. The switch turns the dishwasher off the instant the door is opened and prevents burns from sprayed hot water. It also allows you to add overlooked dishes at any time.

For portable or convertible dishwashers, the mark indicates the model has been tested for stability under normal use. Some have a front-opening door with hinges that release or legs that automatically hinge leg if the machine is in danger of tipping from weight placed on danger tipping weigh open door. Others are specially counterbalanced against tipping.

To get the best performance from your dishwasher, learn its special capabilities and give the dishwasher the small amount of care it requires. Before you use the dishwasher for the first time, read the manufacturer's literature carefully, then follow those directions.

Here are some suggestions on how to use your dishwasher.

1. Remove all hard objects such as bone fragments, nuts, and olive pits from dishes before loading. These could damage moving parts or clog the filter or drain. You do not have to rinse dishes before loading.

2. Place glasses securely on the rack pins to keep them from toppling.

3. If your dishwasher has a rotating, circular, upper rack, place dishes on it so that their weight is distributed evenly to allow w the the rack to rotate freely.

4. Alternate large and small pieces to allow the water to spray freely over the entire load.

5. Use only detergents made especially for dishwashers. Try several brands to see which gives the best results with the water in your area. Never use soap or detergents that form suds. Suds can block spraying water and decrease cleaning efficiency.

6. Use only detergents that flow freely. Dishwasher detergents may become lumpy or hard if they are not used within two or three weeks after the box is opened.

7. Fill the detergent dispensers exactly as the owner's literature specifies. Too little detergent can cause spotting; too much can result in suds.

8. Find out from your local water department the hardness of the water in your area. If it is rated at more than 12 grains per gallon, you may want to obtain a water softening service for your home. Alternatively, you can occasionally add extra detergent or vinegar during the wash action to remove film and spots.

9. Do not put cracked glasses or dishes or slender or small items, such as cheese forks or meat pins, in the dishwasher. If the dishes break or the small items fall into the tub, the dishwasher may be damaged.
